FAQ

DO boys and girls have equal opportunity to receive scholarships?
Yes! The Tibetan Literacy Project firmly believes that a healthy society requires that all it's members get a quality education.
Many girls do not have the chance to attend school, as most families will pool their resources to send only one child to school, usually a boy. Educating women will ensure that the next generation of Tibetans are literate and knowledgeable about their own culture and traditions.

Where does my money go?
100% of all funds donated to the Tibetan Literacy Project go to educating our supported Tibetan children. There are no executive salaries or fancy marketing budgets. We are a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers.

What kinds of opportunities do Tibetan kids have once they receive an education?
Tibetans experience a marginalization similar to the Aboriginal people of Australia and Indigenous peoples of North America. Opportunities to become integrated into the larger society are limited. However, with an education and the ability to speak Chinese, doors open. Teaching jobs can provide enough income to support whole families. A college education can bring empowerment to affect change in the larger society.

How do you select the children the project Supports?
A Village elder is our local contact who makes recommendations for children whose families are in dire financial need or children who are orphaned. This local contact oversees the finances and ensures that your money goes towards tuition and school expenses. Children who show a strong potential for learning and a desire to give back to their communities are also prioritized.

How can I get my company or school involved?
There are many opportunities for businesses and schools to partner with us and cooperate in fundraising initiatives. Please contact us for more information.
How and when do I get a tax receipt for my donations?
For all donations (one-time and monthly), you will receive a single consolidated receipt in January via email for all donations made in the prior year. If you have questions, please contact us.
Is the child I am supporting the same one I see on the Children page?
In order to protect the identities and safety of the supported children, identifying features have been changed.
How does the tibetan literacy project differ from other initiatives in the area?
The Tibetan Literacy Project prioritizes schools where Tibetan identity, language, and culture are actively upheld and respected. Every dollar donated to the Tibetan Literacy Project goes directly to supporting the children's education, as our small organization is run by volunteers without overhead costs. Additionally, our team works with trusted community members and village elders to select, guide and mentor the supported children throughout their educational careers and entry into the workforce.
